La Befana

An
Italian folk tale says that Befana, a woman of stern nature and
forbidding appearance, was asked by the Wise Men for directions
to Bethlehem. They explained to her their mission and asked her
to accompany them, but she declined because of her household duties.
Later a shepherd appeared and asked her to go to Bethlehem, but
she again said no. When it was dark, a great light in the heavens
and a band of angels brought to Befana the realization of her mistake,
and she rushed out with her broom to join the Wise Men. Befana was
too late to find the Christ Child, and now goes about on the Eve
of Epiphany leaving gifts for the sleeping children in Italy. The
society celebrates Befana by inviting children to hear the story
read to them followed by a “real” Befana who appears
and hands out presents. Children of all ages are eager for this
event as delicious food is served with traditional Italian pastries.
Wine Tasting/Dining
Italians simply enjoy their wine and
when combined with a fine dinner, it’s the ultimate in Italian
pleasure.

San Giuseppe

The
Feast of St. Joseph, a Sicilian tradition, is a corner stone event.
Celebrated since the society’s inception, mass is celebrated,
followed by a procession with a statue of St. Joseph and three members
portraying, in customary dress, the Holy Family. The Tupa-Tupa,
or knocking custom for entrance, is performed and once the Holy
Family is admitted, they pass out a tray of oranges and sit down
to eat from an array of meatless dishes prepared by the members.
A home made altar with candles and dried fava beans are displayed.

annual picnic following the celebration of mass. Typically held
in late spring, it is a fun filled day of eating and games for adults
and children alike.

Officers are voted into office in

popular night out where members socialize, eat their prepared
Italian food, drink their favorite wine and relax to watch a

Luau sul Lago "Italian
Style"
Several Club Members came up with the
idea at the last Bocce Tournament. This is a progressive dinner
with guests traveling from one house to the next by water. This
was put together by club members who have homes on Lake Lanier.
They put it all together and it was a super event!
